Victor Cruz can earn up to $4 million in Bears’ contract

If Victor Cruz returns to the production level he had as a member of the Giants from 2011 to 2013, he can earn as much as $4 million with the Bears this season.

The wide receiver, released by New York in February, signed a one-year contract with the Bears on Tuesday morning and the deal includes a signing bonus of $500,000 with a base salary of $1 million. He can earn an additional $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses for every week he is on the 46-man gameday roster ($31,250 per game).

Incentives included in the deal give the 30-year-old Cruz an opportunity to earn an additional $2 million, according to an NFL source with knowledge of the contract.

Victor Cruz incentives are as follows:

50 percent playing time: $250,000
60 percent playing time: $375,000
70 percent playing time: $500,000
5 touchdowns: $250,000
6 touchdowns: $375,000
7 touchdowns: $500,000
40 receptions: $250,000
50 receptions: $375,000
60 receptions: $500,000
600 receiving yards: $250,000
700 receiving yards: $375,000
800 receiving yards: $500,000

Cruz caught 39 passes for 586 yards and one touchdown in 15 games for the Giants last season. His last big season – before multiple serious injuries – came in 2013 when he had 73 catches for 998 yards and four touchdowns.

The Giants reduced the pay of Cruz to keep him on the team last season but he still earned $5.4 million in 2016. Had the Giants kept him this year, he would have counted $9.4 million against their salary cap.

Cruz will be competing for playing time with former first-round draft pick Kevin White, Cameron Meredith, Markus Wheaton and Kendall Wright. The Bears guaranteed him only $500,000. Wheaton signed an $11 million, two-year contract with $5 million guaranteed. Wright signed a $2 million, one-year deal with $1 million guaranteed and the opportunity to earn an additional $2 million in incentives.
